Ronald Reagan Inauguration
On January 20th, 1981 the first inauguration of the 40th president Ronald Reagan was held. Alongside him were his wife Nancy Reagan and his Vice President George H.W. Bush. The ceremony was held at the West Front of the United States Capitol Building for the first time.
The new Presidents speech made no references what so ever to the hostage crisis or the long awaited release of them. Instead he discussed the need to end unemployment and future limiting of federal governments power. He promised an "Era of national renewal". As he spoke these words all 52 remaining prisoners were flown back to safety. "In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem. From time to time, we have been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. But if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together in and out of government must bear the burden." - Ronald Reagan, January 20, 1981 |
